Yavatmal, Dec 15 (PTI) Maharashtra Forests Minister Patangrao Kadam today announced launching a high-level inquiry into the instances of smuggling of sandalwood trees and poaching of wild animals in the region. According to the estimate given by the forest department itself, about 18,000 trees are illegally felled every year in the district causing an estimated loss of Rs one crore to the state exchequer. The minister is on official tour of the district, in which he will visit wild life sanctuaries at Tipeshwar and Penganga and at various eco-tourism centres among rehabilitation sites. On relief and rehabilitation of tribals in forests, Kadam said, "the displaced villagers under Tipeshwar would be rehabilitated in the adjacent village of Parwa and will be paid compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each family". The minister said 204 hectares out of total 304 hectares of land earmarked has already been acquired and the first instalment of Rs 31,68,000 to 168 affected families who have agreed to relocate. Kadam refused to react to the report on alleged jungle safari of the minister of State for Education Fauzia Khan during her visit to South Africa. PTI CORR NSK
